CRUK has formed a partnership with the MPA which is a similar trade association for the aggregates, asphalt, cement, concrete, dimension stone, lime, mortar and industrial sand industries.
Since its formation in 2009, MPA has grown significantly and now represents the vast majority of UK mineral products operating companies across its 14 product groups. These include most of the independent SME quarrying companies throughout the UK, as well as the 9 major international and global companies. We cover 100% of UK cement and lime production, 90% of GB aggregates production, 95% of asphalt and over 70% of ready-mixed concrete and precast concrete production.
CRUK is excited about the future prospects of both sectors working together to help lower each other’s carbon footprint and to provide sustainable outlets for the waste that is directly or indirectly produced. In 2022 the cement sector used 663,000 tonnes of waste derived products from various industries to help lower its reliance upon virgin materials.
CRUK and the MPA will be exploring opportunities to divert more carpet and textile flooring waste into the production of cement products as well as, looking into the possibility of using certain fibre types in the production of pre-cast concrete products.
